Chapter 10: Raelyn

After spending the afternoon crawling over the sandy hillside with Jax, Rae was worn out and had sand in everything: clothes, hair, teeth, even her tennis shoes. So they’d parted ways over a donut and coffee, and she’d gone home to rest and wash the grit away.

But it was so worth it to see Jax smile. When he had laughed that day, it was genuine and carefree. It made Rae happy to see him enjoying life. He was a handsome, hard-bodied rush she couldn’t get over. But no one deserved to feel alone or to work their life away.

After another night with Dawson’s fuzzy blue fins keeping her warm, Rae felt the simple joys of childhood come back to her. She’d closed the shop for a few days, saying it was for the Fourth of July, and forwarded calls to her cell. It was nice not to worry about the business and to savor little joys like the comfort of soft things and the tingling hot adrenaline from new experiences. Rae had missed the thrill of life.

Jax picked her up again the next morning and drove them out of town in a different direction. “I found a zipline that I want to try.”

“A zipline? You mean, ride over the trees on a rope?”

Jax rested a hand atop his steering wheel and pulled something out of the backseat. “A cable, but yeah. And I brought breakfast sandwiches this time.”

“And no Pint, I see.” Rae selected a sandwich from the bag Jax sat in the front seat, unwrapped it, and handed it to him.

“Oh, thanks.” Jax took a bite, chewed, and then motioned toward the base. “He’s at the gym this morning. He likes cars and racing but doesn’t like heights or board sports. I would’ve brought Danish or Ferrard, two other guys from our crew, but they might possibly be hung over this morning.”

“Great life choices, I see.” Rae picked up a sandwich for herself.

Jax hummed a sad note, then smiled. “Just because we basically live in the ocean doesn’t mean we have to drink like fish. But a few do when they can when they’re off duty.”

The ride up the gravel road through the trees made Rae’s heart happy. She rarely got to be a passenger and missed looking out at the sunlight filtering through the branches and the birds flitting from tree to tree.

After the previous day’s ride, there was no doubt in Rae’s mind that Jax was a good driver. She felt safe with him, even in some scary situations.

Like sandy ridges that I can’t see over. How on earth did he know we would be okay?

Jax foresaw what she couldn’t, and it gave her a sense of security she didn’t have before.

They parked up high on a hillside by a small building with a long set of stairs up to a landing.

Jax held the door to the office for Rae as they walked inside. After he’d got them signed up and paid, they were fitted for their safety equipment.
